Zidane and Materazzi make peace after chance meeting

Zinedine Zidane and Marco Materazzi, involved in the most infamous encounter in the history of the World Cup, made peace on Wednesday after a chance meeting in Milan.

Playing the final match of his storied career, Zidane head-butted Materazzi in the chest after the Italian defender insulted Zidane's sister, and the Frenchman was sent off in overtime of the 2006 World Cup won by Italy over France on penalty kicks. As recently as this spring, Zidane said he'd rather die than apologize to Materazzi.

But they ran into each other at the Hotel Melia Milano, where Real Madrid was staying in preparation for its Champions League game against AC Milan. Zidane, an advisor to Real Madrid, was at the hotel when he bumped into Materazzi, who had come to visit Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho, his former coach at Inter Milan.

The meeting ended with an affectionate hug, and the past was forgotten.
