USA calls up Tarpley and Osborne for Italy series

[WOMEN'S WORLD CUP QUALIFYING] Veterans Lindsay Tarpley and Leslie Osborne were among four players added to U.S. women’s national team coach Pia Sundhage's traveling squad that will leave Sunday for the USA's game against Italy in the first leg of the home-and-home series that will determine the final spot in the 2011 Women’s World Cup.

Tarpley, who scored in the USA's gold-medal victory at the 2004 Athens Olympics and has 120 caps, participated in the USA’s pre-qualifying training camp, her first since fully recovering from ACL surgery.

This is Osborne’s first call-up since July 2009. She has 61 caps and was a member of the USA’s 2007 Women’s World Cup Team but has been nagged by injuries, most recently a broken collarbone suffered in August.

Sundhage is bringing the 20 players who were in Mexico for the Concacaf Women’s World Cup qualifying tournament, while Tarpley, Osborne and Tina DiMartino have been added as midfield reinforcements.

Goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris, who trained with the team in Cancun but was not part of the game-day rosters, is also with the team.

Cal senior Alex Morgan played for the Golden Bears in their 2-1 loss to Duke in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tournament Friday and will now rejoin the U.S. women.

The first leg will take place in Padova Nov. 20 at Euganeo Stadium and will be shown live on ESPN3.com at 10:30 a.m. ET.

The second leg will take place on Nov. 27 at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill., and kick off at 1 p.m. ET and also be broadcast on ESPN3.com.

Natasha Kai left out again? What a shame for a team desperately in need of offense.
