FIFA vice president Chung Mong Joon hopes rally support in Asia for South Korea as the unity candidate to defeat the United States in the campaign to hostthe 2022 World Cup.

Chung plans to fly to Kuala Lumpur on Monday to seek the backing of the Asian Football Confederation, whose president Mohamed BinHammam will support his native Qatar. He will also lobby Japan and Australia to boost Asia’s chances.

“Four nations in the Asia region are competing … so votes could be divided,”Chung, who helped South Korea win the right to co-host the 2002 World Cup. “Over the next 10 days, we will attempt to build solidarity in Asia and then move on to the next stage in which South Koreawill be named the host.”
