Golden Bears match best run ever

[CALIFORNIA-BROWN MEN] California matched its best run ever in the NCAA Men's Tournament when it beat Brown, 2-0, Sunday afternoon to move in to the quarterfinals.

Sophomore John Fitzpatrick headed in the first goal and sixth-seeded Cal collected an own goal as the Golden Bears improved their record to 14-2-3 and set up a date at Akron Saturday.

“It was a great game today,” Cal coach Kevin Grimes said. “Brown and Cal both played with everything that they had, and I think both teams should be commended for a great performance.”

Fitzpatrick scored in the 30th minute on a header off a corner kick by senior forward Davis Paul, who added to his single-season school record of 14 assists this season.

“It was a great ball by Davis Paul, and [I was] just in the right place at the right time,” Fitzpatrick said. “It just happened to come to me, and I put it in.”

Paul was again involved in the second goal eight minutes into the second half, crossing a ball into the penalty area that deflected off Brown defender Eric Robertson and past goalkeeper Paul Grandstrand into the goal.

Glad they got one right, after the debacle hosting UC Santa Barbara. BTW, the referee in the match with UCSB had never refereed a college level men's soccer match. Not a good time for learning on the jobbas his performance proved.
