[NORTH CAROLINA-SMU MEN] North Carolina needed its third shootout win in three games — an NCAA record — to beat SMU and return to the Men’s College Cup forthe third year in a row.

Carolina claimed a 4-2 shootout win over the Mustangs after their game ended in a 1-1 tie to punched its ticket for Santa Barbara, Calif., where it will facetop-seed Louisville in Friday’s semifinals.

On SMU’s first attempt, Josue Soto‘s shot deflected off the crossbar and UNC keeper Scott Goodwin stopped Leone Cruz on the Mustangs’ third shot.
