New Houston shirt deal worth $12.7 million

[MLS] The new Houston Dynamo jerseys to be unveiled Tuesday at a press conference will have "Greenstar" emblazoned across the front. According to a story in the Houston Chronicle, a five-year jersey sponsorship deal worth $12.7 million has been brokered by the team and Greenstar Recycling, a waste management and recycling company based in Ireland that runs its North American operations out of Houston.

Under terms of the deal Greenstar is also the first founding partner of a new stadium scheduled to open in the spring of 2012. Ground-breaking for the stadium is to be held in January.

The deal replaces an expired four-year jersey sponsorship by Amigo Energy that was valued at between $1.5 million and $2 million. Amigo sponsored the Dynamo beginning in 2007, its second season in Houston after operator-investor Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) decided to move it from San Jose.

Unauthorized photos of the new jerseys appeared on Web sites late last week. Team and company officials declined comment.

The Greenstar logo will appear on all Dynamo merchandise, and the company will also handle waste management and recycling at the new stadium.
