Gone are the days when MLS expansion teams wait until February begin training for their opening campaign. The Vancouver Whitecaps have one more day on their 12-day training camp in Ventura, Calif.,
where Coach Teitur Thordarson has worked with their first major signing, U.S. international Jay DeMerit, and four
expansion draft picks.
Goalkeeper Joe Cannon, midfielder John Thorrington, defender Jonathan Leathers and midfielder Shea Salinas all participated in the camp, while forward Atiba Harris was excused because his wife recently gave birth to their first child.
“It's a very interesting mix [of new players],” Thordarson said. “Some have a lot of experience and others are younger. But they have the qualities we've been looking for and that's the main thing.”
Vancouver has nine players signed to MLS contracts in 2011, and 17 other players trained in Ventura. The Whitecaps signed many players for their 2010 D-2 campaign with an eye on adding some of them for the 2011 MLS season.
