The return to form of striker Jermain Defoe propelled Tottenham to a 3-3 tie at Twente Enschede that coupled with Inter Milan's 3-0 loss to Werder Bremen moved Spurs into the
Champions' League round of 16 as Group A winners.
Defoe scored twice as Tottenham took, and then squandered one-goal leads, yet still topped the group with 11 points from six matches. Defoe, out since early September with damaged ankle ligaments, netted his first goals since resuming competitive play last month. He drilled home a great through ball from Aaron Lennon in the 47th minute for a 2-1 lead and scored again 12 minutes later to break a 2-2 tie.
Tottenham earned the tie despite manager Harry Redknapp resting a few of his regulars with a league match against defending champion Chelsea on Sunday. Tottenham fifth, three points behind fourth-place Manchester City and just four points back of Chelsea in third.
