Independiente spoils Goias' dreams

Argentine club Independiente ended an amazing run by modest Brazilian club Goias with a penalty-kick shootout win in the Copa Sudamericana final. Goias, which was relegated to the Brazilian second division last month, won the first leg of the final, 2-0, but fell 3-1 on Wednesday and 5-3 in the shootout to break the 5-5 aggregate tie.

It marks the first Copa Sudamericana title for Independiente, which has won the Libertadores Cup a record seven times (between 1964 and 1984).

Independiente is also struggling in domestic play, sitting two places from the bottom of the Apertura championship.
