Former England star Paul Gascoigne avoided jail time for drunk-driving when he received an eight-week sentence, suspended for a year, and banned from driving for three years. He
was also given an alcohol treatment order.
Gascoigne, 43, was stopped by police officers Oct. 8 in Newcastle and upon tested was found to be four times over the legal limit of alcohol. If he re-offends in the next 12 months, the jail term will be triggered.
"I hope not to see you again,” said District Judge Stephen Earl.
The court was told Gascoigne was in the fifth week of a 12-week recovery program. He also attends Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings.
