Zips' high-flying attack aims for better results

[AKRON MEN] Akron returns to the Men's College Cup hoping for the little things. Like scoring a goal. The Zips brought a perfect 23-0-0 record to the finals a year ago, defeated North Carolina in a shootout after a scoreless draw, then was defeated by Virginia under the same circumstance in the championship.

The Zips lost Player of the Year Teal Bunbury to MLS from the 2009 team, but Jamaican freshman Darren M attocks has come up big the postseason with six goals and three assists in five games in the Mid-American and NCAA Tournament.

Among all scorers, Mattocks is ranked third nationally with 18 goals, one behind Michigan's Soony Saad and two behind Division I leader, Penn State's Corey Hertzog.

The Akron attack is ranked No. 1 in the nation, averaging 2.65 goals per game and has 15 goals in five postseason games.

The Zip are again a young team with only two seniors in the starting lineup, but this could be the last hurrah for several players. MLS clubs are looking closely at Akron, which has as many as five possible first-round draft picks.

Akron, the No. 1 team in the final Soccer America Top 25, was only seeded No. 3 by the NCAA men's soccer committee, but the Zips have beaten two of the other three teams at this year's College Cup. They earned a 3-0 decision at North Carolina in the first game of the season and knocked off Michigan, 7-1, in October.
