Colombian keeper headed for Philly?

Two months after he played for Colombia in a friendly against the U.S. at PPL Park near Philadelphia, keeper Faryd Mondragon appears to be on the verge of signing with the Union.

The Philadelphia Daily News is reporting a deal for Mondragon to leave German club Cologne and join MLS on a free transfer is nearly done. Mondragon, 39, has also been linked with the Red Bulls, due to a longtime friendship with fellow Colombian Juan Pablo Angel, whose New York contract hasn't been renewed.

Mondragon had been relegated to the backup role by former Cologne coach Zvonimir Soldo, who was fired in late October. Philly still has keepers Chris Seitz and Brad Knighton, though Seitz's option was not picked up and he is eligible for Stage 2 of the Re-Entry Draft to be conducted Wednesday.
