Three Americans move into knockout stage

[EUROPA LEAGUE] Americans Jozy Altidore (Villarreal), Maurice Edu (Rangers) and Sacha Kljestan (Anderlecht) are headed to the knockout stage of the Europa League, whose draw will be held Friday at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. The big surprise was the elimination of defending champion Atletico Madrid.

Atletico needed to win its final game at home to advance but tied Bayer Leverkusen, 1-1, to finish third in Group B. Greek club Aris beat Rosenborg, 2-0, to take second place behind Leverkusen on Thursday.

Freddy Adu is on the Aris roster but has not suited up for the first team this season.

Kljestan started Thursday for Anderlecht in its 2-0 win over Hajduk Split.

The top two teams from each of the 12 groups along with the eight third-place teams from the UEFA Champions League group stage advance to the round of 32.

The draw for the Champions League will also be held Friday.

I think that is great that 3 Americans are in that position. It should give them a little experience at a higher level playing in Europe which hopefully should transfer over to the MNT. Hopefully they will play solid.
