Sundhage gives stars rest

[U.S. WOMEN] U.S. women’s national team head coach Pia Sundhage kicks off a World Cup year with a six-day training camp for 26 players Jan. 8-13 at the Home Depot Center. Eight veterans are being rested and will join the national team for the trip to China later in the month to play in the 2011 Four Nations Tournament.

Abby Wambach, Shannon Boxx, Rachel Buehler, Amy LePeilbet, Carli Lloyd , Heather Mitts, Heather O’Reilly and Christie Rampone will skip the HDC camp and join 15 players for the trip to Chongqing, where the USA will play matches against Sweden Jan. 21, Canada Jan. 23 and China Jan. 25. The USA and Sweden will also meet at the Women's World Cup.

The camp squad does include, however, 14 players, including all-time cap leader Kristine Lilly, from the team that qualified for the 2011 Women’s World Cup by winning a two-leg playoff series against Italy.

Megan Rapinoe, who started both games against Italy, is one of seven players without a team following the contraction of WPS from an anticipated eight teams to six.

Tobin Heath (illness and an ankle injury) and Hope Solo (shoulder surgery), both 2008 Olympic gold medalists, also return after major injuries. Solo will do some light training but will not be cleared to play.

Sundhage has called three players for the first time: Boston Breakers midfielder Jordan Angeli, Meghan Klingenberg, who finished her career at North Carolina this past fall, and 20-year-old Kristie Mewis, who is a sophomore at Boston College.

Also called up from the college ranks were Cal's Alex Morgan, who scored against Italy, and Sydney Leroux, the USA’s all-time leading scorer at the U-20 Women’s World Cup level.
