'Insurance issues' kill Beckham loan

David Beckham's pending loan to Tottenham Hotspur has been waved off for "insurance issues," according to an Associated Press report released Sunday.

Beckham, 35, will train with Spurs until joining the Galaxy for preseason training in late January. The training stint can help the London club even if if he can't get on the field in a competitive environment, according to manager Harry Redknapp.

"He will be a great influence around the place and I am sure we will all benefit from his winning mentality," Redknapp said in a statement . "I think everyone will enjoy having him here. We'd love to have him here for longer but respect his commitments to LA Galaxy. They wanted him back in early February so that made it difficult to do a playing deal on the basis of three weeks."

Beckham (whose wife, Victoria, is expecting their fourth child this summer) trained with Arsenal three years ago and returned to play 25 matches in the 2008 season, by far the most he's played in any single MLS campaign. Last year he suffered an Achilles' tendon injury while playing on loan with AC Milan and played only five league matches after returning in September.

"It's important that I maintain a high level of fitness during the MLS offseason," said Beckham. "I look forward to getting to work as soon as possible."
