Qatar handed lifeline

[ASIAN CUP] Facing elimination in case of a loss, host Qatar got two goals from Yusef Ahmed to beat China, 2-0, Wednesday and stay alive at the Asian Cup.

After saying his players had forgotten everything they had learned following the 2-0 loss to Uzbekistan in its opener, Qatar's French coach, Bruno Metsu, was ecstatic with the win over China.

"We wanted to show the real face of our team tonight and that's what the players did," Metsu said. "I am very proud of their performance and we will try and do the same against Kuwait to qualify for the next stage. I think we sent a good message to the fans and I think they were very satisfied tonight."

China coach Gao Hongbo was not disappointed with his team's performance.

"I said to him at halftime," he said, "even if we had Gianluigi Buffon in goal he couldn't have stopped the two goals. I am happy with his performance."

Server Djeparov's goal in the 64th minute gave Uzbekistan a 2-1 win over Kuwait for its second win in two games.

Going into Sunday's final games, all four Group A teams remain alive: Uzbekistan with six points, Qatar and China with three and Kuwait with zero.
