World Cup referee Moreno pleads guilty to smuggling charges

Ecuadoran Byron Moreno, the 2002 World Cup, faces up to more than five years in Federal prison after pleading guilty Thursday to heroin smuggling charges.

Moreno was arrested in September at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport after arriving on a commercial flight from Ecuador with more than 10 bags of heroin in 10 clear plastic bags attached to his body.

He "became visibly nervous," according to a complaint filed in Brooklyn federal court, and a strip search revealed "hard objects on the defendant's stomach, back and both of his legs."
