Galaxy blocks Beckham again

The David Beckham-Tottenham saga took another twist Thursday when the Galaxy refused to give permission for him to play in a closed-door training match against Queens Park Rangers.

Galaxy officials have blocked a loan deal for Beckham and insist they expect him back in Southern California Feb 10. They prevented him from playing in the training match due to insurance issues, the same factor that has been cited as an obstacle to a loan move.

The two teams have not been able to agree on payment of insurance payments that would cover an injury while playing or training with Spurs. MLS regulations require league approval and supplemental insurance coverage, if needed, for players under contract going on loan, participating in tours, or training with foreign teams.

While on loan to AC Milan last year, Beckham suffered a torn Achilles' tendon that knocked him out of contention for a spot on England's World Cup team and sidelined him until September. He is in the last year of his five-year MLS contract that has produced staggering sales of jerseys and season tickets but only 57 Galaxy appearances and no MLS Cups.
