[U.S. U-17 BOYS] U.S. under-17 national team coach Wilmer Cabrera named his 20-player roster for the 2011 Concacaf U-17
Championship in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The USA's goal: continue its streak of being the only country to have played in every Under-17 World Cup.
The USA will travel to Jamaica on Saturday and open with its first Group B match against Cuba on Monday.
The U-17s round out play in the three-team group on Friday against Panama.
The top two teams in each group will advance to the quarterfinals. The four quarterfinal winners will move on to the U-17 World Cup in Mexico.
The roster includes seven players who have been in U.S. Soccer’s Residency Program in Bradenton, Fla., since the start of this two-year cycle: Alejandro Guido, Andrew Oliver, Marc Pelosi, Fernando Pina, Mario Rodriguez, Nathan Smith and Andrew Souders.
The lone professional player on the roster is Jack McBean, who recently joined the national team and signed with the LA Galaxy in January.
The lone foreign-based player is Texan Matt Dunn, who entered FC Cologne's youth system.
“The good thing is that we have been to Montego Bay so we know what the travel, the fields, the weather, and the environment is like there,” said Cabrera, referencing the team's trip to Jamaica in late January, which included 19 players on the qualifying roster. “We’ll get there for this event on the same day as everyone else. We’re all going to be there two days before, but we went two weeks ago and played there, so we know what kind of environment we’re going to be going into.”
