Bayern gets revenge at San Siro

[UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE] Bayern Munich gained revenge for its loss to Inter Milan in the 2010 UEFA Champions League final with a 1-0 win at the San Siro on Wednesday in the first leg of their round-of-16 series.

Mario Gomez scored his seventh goal of the competition -- tying Chelsea's Nicolas Anelka and Inter Milan's Samuel Eto'o for the lead -- to give Bayern the last-minute victory.

Bayern was in excellent form with stars Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery in fine form. Brazilian Luiz Gustavo, picked up from Hoffenheim during the winter break, also had a very good game.

“Inter surprised me, they played to win and that is very beautiful,” said Bayern coach Louis Van Gaal. “The whole world has seen a wonderful game and I think both sets of fans could be happy with this game. In last year’s final, Inter attacked less but got a better result. But that’s soccer.”

Manchester United was the only one of the four English clubs not to win their first legs, but its 0-0 tie at Marseille puts it in good position to move on.

"The result is fine, I think it was a fair result," said United manager Alex Ferguson said. "I don't think Marseille presented any great problems to us in an attacking sense, they only had one strike on goal."
