Man City defender Toure suspended for failed drug test

  • BBC, Thursday, March 3, 2011 5:01 PM

Defender Kolo Toure, who has played more than 50 games for Manchester City since arriving from Arsenal in July 2009, has been suspended after testing positive for a specified substance.

The club confirmed 29-year-old had been suspended "pending the outcome of the legal process."

"A specified substance" is defined by World Anti-Doping Agency as one that is "more susceptible to a credible, non-doping explanation." Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger says Toure blames the positive result on taking his wife's diet supplement: "[He] wants to control his weight a little bit because that’s where he has some problems. He took the product of his wife.”

Manchester City is in pursuit of three trophies. It meets Reading in the FA Cup quarterfinals, Dynamo Kiev in the Europa League, and is third in the EPL, 10 points behind leaders Manchester United.
