Farfan silences critics

[UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE] Schalke 04's Jefferson Farfan scored twice to give Schalke 04 a 3-1 win over Valencia and a berth in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League with a 4-2 aggregate victory. In the process, the Peruvian silenced the critics who brandished him as an ungrateful mercenary.

Farfan wanted out at Schalke after fans ripped him for showing up late at the start of winter training camp.

"Two goals. That is very good but I am just happy the team is through, that is the most important thing," Farfan said. "I hope I gave our fans something to smile about."

He scored on a free kick in the first half to even the aggregate score and chipped the ball over Valencia keeper Vicente Guaita in stoppage time to clinch the victory.

In Wednesday's other game, Tottenham and AC Milan played to a 0-0 tie in London. The result sent Spurs through to the quarterfinals, 1-0, on aggregate.
