[MLS] Two goals by Fredy Montero powered Seattle past defending champ Colorado, 3-1, in the Community Shield match Wednesday night at Qwest
Field. Montero also assisted on the first goal with a free kick headed in by defender Jhon Kennedy Hurtado that broke open a goalless game in the 60th minute. The Rapids tied the game
three minutes later when Jeff Larentowicz converted a penalty kick awarded when Hurtado fouled Omar Cummings.
Montero scored in the 67th minute and again in the 78th on assists by Erik Friberg and O’Brian White, respectively, as the Sounders erased some of the disappointment from losing to expansion teams Portland (0-2) and Vancouver (2-3) at the Cascadia Summit last weekend. By the time of Montero’s second goal, Colorado had replaced most of their starting lineup that will probably be the same one used when the regular season begins next week.
Former Sounders Tyrone Marshall and Sanna Nyassi received a nice ovation from the crowd of 7,355 fans when they came on as substitutes for the last 20 minutes. Marshall was acquired in the Re-Entry Draft, Nyassi was claimed by Vancouver in the Expansion Draft and traded to Colorado in exchange for an international slot
