Argentina and Uruguay will bid to stage the World Cup jointly in 2030, the 100th anniversary year of soccer's showpiece. Uruguay hosted the first World Cup in 1930 and lifted the title. Argentina
hosted and won the World Cup in 1978.
“We have agreed to set up a bi-national committee to support the initiative together with the national soccer associations, AFA and AUF, to promote the candidature of Argentina and Uruguay for the 2030 World Cup,” Argentina’s Foreign minister Hector Timerman said.
As Olympic champions, Uruguay hosted the inaugural World Cup and beat neighbor Argentina, 4-2, in the final.
