Egypt's Pharaohs could miss African showcase

Three-time defending champion Egypt is in danger of missing out on the African Cup of Nations for the first time in 30 years following its 1-0 loss at South Africa.

The Pharaohs -- Africa's winningest team with seven continental championships -- conceded a stoppage-time goal to Katlego Mphela that gave Bafana Bafana its first triumph over them in a competitive international. Egypt must beat group leader South Africa in the return match in Cairo to qualify for next year's finals in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

Other teams in danger of missing out: four-time winner Cameroon and 2004 champion Tunisia. Cameroon's Indomitable Lions fell at Senegal, 1-0 on a stoppage-time goal and trail the Lions of Teranga by five points in Group E with three games to go. Botswana, which has never played in the finals, has beaten Tunisia twice and became the first team to qualify thanks to a 1-0 win in Chad.
