Cruyff prompts Ajax board exodus

Johan Cruyff, whose play led Ajax Amsterdam to glory in the 1970s, returned to Ajax in an advisory role in February. He was to be a member of a "sounding board group" on technical issues. Now Ajax’s board of directors says it will quit amid a bitter disagreement with the man who also coached Barcelona's "Dream Team" of the early 1990s.

“Cruyff is more important than us," said Club chairman Uri Coronel, who added he and the two other directors will remain in place until replacements can be found.

Ajax has not won a Dutch league title since 2004 and asked Cruyff to draw up a plan to improve its performance. Ajax won the last of its four European Cups in 1995.
