The Mexican federation has suspended Afro-Colombian forward Carlos Darwin Quintero for six matches for his part in a fight he says was spurred by a racial epithet.

Thefight erupted after Quintero received a red card during Santos Laguna’s 3-0 win over Cruz Azul. Quintero says, as he was leaving the field, Cruz Azul’s Mexican defender RogelioChavez called him a “shi–y ape.”

Mexico’s National Commission Against Discrimination has started an investigation of Quintero’s accusation and Chavez hasbeen notified of the probe and given five days to submit a statement. Because Santos Laguna did not immediately raise the matter of Chavez’s alleged insult, the referee’s report to thefederation’s Disciplinary Committee dealt only with the conduct of Quintero, who was suspended for three matches for the red card and an additional three for the fight with Chavez.
