Whitbread's Norwich wins promotion to EPL

[AMERICANS ABROAD] American defender Zak Whitbread started for Norwich City in its 1-0 win over Portsmouth that clinched promotion from the League Championship to the Premier League.

Canadian national team striker Simeon Jackson was again the hero with the lone goal, his fifth in the last six games.

Whitbread was born in Houston but spent most of his youth abroad. He started out at Liverpool but never played for the Reds in the EPL.

He then moved to Millwall, where he spent more than four seasons before joining Norwich 16 months ago.

Norwich is four points ahead of third-place Cardiff City with one game to play. QPR already clinched promotion.

The winner of the promotion playoffs will claim the third berth in the EPL.
