Goalie Jose de Jesus Corona was dropped from Mexico's team for the Gold Cup after television cameras caught him headbutting Morelia trainer Sergio Martin during a brawl involving his club Cruz Azul and Morelia in the Torneo Clausura semifinals on Sunday.
Two Cruz Azul players and a Morelia
player were red carded after the fight. Corona, who escaped without punishment at the time, was replaced by Monterrey goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco for the Gold
Cup. Corona and Cruz Azul teammate Christian Gimenez, who was one of the players to receive a red card, have been suspended for six league matches. Gimenez
punched a fan who had run on to the field.
"One of the points we've considered in the national team are the values of social responsibility and nonviolence,'' Mexico national team
director Hector Gonzalez Inarritu said. "The sporting part is important, the winning of trophies and lifting cups, but it's also important to be an example to
the fans and to young people.''
This isn't the first time Corona has been in trouble. His involvement in a bar brawl cost him his place in the 2010 World Cup squad.
