Berriz named first woman president

[AYSO] Paula Berriz has been elected as AYSO's new National President, making her the first woman president in the youth organization's 47-year history.

Berriz was elected to AYSO's board of directors six years ago and most recently served as its vice president.

She beat out another current member of the board of directors, William Hummell, and succeeds Mike Wade, who stepped down at the conclusion of his term after serving four years as National President.

"I'm very honored, I'm very touched and I thank you. I will not disappoint you," said Berriz after her victory was announced.

Berriz, who lives in Santa Clarita, Calif., has served as an AYSO volunteer for 27 years as a coach, referee, Regional Commissioner, Area Director and Section Director.

Her three children, Jason, Brittany and Erica played AYSO soccer from the ages of 5 to 18. She is married to Frank Berriz.
