Improving England has competition for spots

[WOMEN'S WORLD CUP COUNTDOWN] England coach Hope Powell named five WPS players, led by star Kelly Smith, to her roster for the Women's World Cup.

Smith is joined by her Boston Breakers teammate Alex Scott and the Sky Blue FC trio of U.S.-bred keeper Karen Bardsley, Anita Asante and Eniola Aluko.

Powell said the rising level of play in England -- it recently launched the FA Women's Super League -- has made her task of picking the team more difficult.

"I have got a really talented bunch of players to choose from and this choice has been made even more difficult in recent times by the emergence of some younger players who have come to the fore and have done really well," she said. "They deserve an opportunity to be part of something really great, which is what this World Cup will be."

England beat the USA, 2-1, in April to raise its hopes in Germany.
