Open Cup clash casts Fewing in unique role

By pulling off a stunning upset of Seattle in the U.S. Open Cup Tuesday night, Kitsap Pumas head coach Peter Fewing could bite the hand that feeds him, so to
speak. In addition to coaching the Premier Development League team, Fewing also works for the Sounders on their television broadcasts. "Yeah it is [strange], no question," Fewing said. "It will be a
bit strange, but a big honor. Our guys are excited and so am I ... I'm
trying to keep it as, it's another game, but there are a lot of factors."
The former Seattle University coach, who won NAIA and NCAA Division II titles before leaving the post in 2006,
operates Pumas on an annual player payroll of $36,000 as one of just four PDL teams who pay their players at all. "The fact that the Sounders are the Sounders and we're the Kitsap Pumas, and
there's a massive gap between us," Fewing said. "On every level they're beyond us. And all of our guys would love to be wearing a Sounders jersey at some point."
The Sounders have won the
Open Cup in their first two MLS seasons and Fewing doesn't expect any favors from head coach Sigi Schmid. Nor does he wish to be the center of attention, no matter how bizarre the circumstances. "I
don't want to be any kind of distraction," said Fewing. "That would be inappropriate."
