Onyewu heads to Portugal's Sporting

[AMERICANS ABROAD] Oguchi Onyewu, who didn't play for the USA at the 2011 Gold Cup, signed a three-year contract with Portuguese club Sporting on a free transfer from AC Milan.

Onyewu, who has struggled to recover from a bad knee injury suffered in October 2009, spent the last half of the 2010-11 season on loan to Dutch club FC Twente.

He didn't play for the USA at the Gold Cup after struggling in the 4-0 loss to Spain on the eve of the tournament.

Sporting finished third in the Portuguese league in 2011 and will play in the Europa League.

It is scheduled to play in the Herbalife World Football Challenge against Juventus on July 23 at BMO Field in Toronto.

Sporting is Onyewu's sixth European club.
