Real Madrid launches new spending spree

Real Madrid acquired Portuguese Fabio Coentrao from Benfica for $43 million, making the 23-year-old left back the Spanish giants their fifth signing of the summer.

Coentrao, who signed a six-year deal, joins Turkish midfielders Nuri Sahin and Hamit Altintop, French defender Raphael Varane and Spanish forward Jose Callejon as Real Madrid's latest acquisitions.

Coentrao didn't immediately stand out at Benfica when he arrived from Rio Ave in 2007, but he had an excellent 2009-10 season when Benfica won the league title and impressed for Portugal at the 2010 World Cup.
