Richmond Kickers pull another shock upset

[U.S. OPEN CUP] USL PRO's Richmond Kickers pulled yet another upset in the U.S. Open Cup when they beat MLS's Sporting Kansas City, unbeaten in its last 12 games, 2-0, in a game interrupted by a 82-minute delay because of bad weather. The win was the second in a row for the Kickers over an MLS club and the fifth in their history in the Open Cup.

Shortly after play resumed, Shaka Bangura scored on the Kickers' first shot on goal, and David Bulow added an insurance goal on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute.

The loss, before an announced crowd of 4,794, was Sporting KC’s first at its new Livestrong Sporting Park.

The Kickers, winners of the 1995 Open Cup before MLS was formed, beat the Columbus Crew, 2-1, in the third round.

In 2000, Richmond defeated the Colorado Rapids, 3-0, in the third round. The Kickers also beat D.C. United, 2-1, in 2004, and the Los Angeles Galaxy, 1-0, in 2007.

In other Open Cup action on Tuesday, the Chicago Fire crushed the New York Red Bulls, 4-0, and FC Dallas beat Real Salt Lake, 2-0, in a rematch of their weekend MLS match RSL won by the same score.

The Chicago-New York game drew only 1,500 fans as it was rescheduled to start in the afternoon so fans would not have to deal with disabled lights caused by Monday's thunderstorm in the Chicago area.

Richmond faces Chicago on Aug. 20 in one semifinal, while FC Dallas meets the winner of Wednesday's Seattle-Los Angeles game.
