Freddy Adu is back in MLS and on Saturday made his debut for the Philadelphia Union. The 22-year-old started the game in midfield and played 61 minutes before being substitutedfor by Danny Mwanga. Adu’s only appearance on the stat sheet in the 2-2 tie with FC Dallas was a yellow card for a “reckless tackle” in the game’s 27th minute, reports
“You always have to get the first one out of the way,” Adu said. “I have to get involved more … I got to get on the same page as the rest ofthe guys. We have a great team, man, we are going to be hard to beat.”
Union coach Peter Nowak, who coached Adu at D.C. United after Adu joined MLS at age 14, said, “Wegave [Adu] a start. You can still see he needs game fitness. I think he understood the concept of the 60 minutes he played. He is going to get more dangerous if he is going to move fromplace-to-place. We have to figure out the tactical part, we have to see where he fits in our system. For the first time, it was good to have him.”
Said defender DannyCaliff, “It’s obviously not easy to come into a team, practice with them one day, and then sort everything out. He showed some flashes of what he can be.”
This is what is wrong with American Soccer. Novak aquires Adu and puts him at outside mid? He has better touch and vision than any other player on the team and he puts him in a role where he won’t touch the ball the most? Why? He needs to touch the ball as much as possible on this team especially in the MLS. I just don’t understand this type of thinking? Only in America do you put your most talented player at FWD or outside mid.
