Los Angeles-born winger Joe Benny Corona, who stars for Mexican first division newcomer Club Tijuana, has been called up to Mexico’s U-22 squad. Corona revealed inan interview with ESPN.com that he was on former U.S. coachBob Bradley’s preliminary roster for the Aug. 10 friendly against Mexico, but Bradley was fired before the official roster was announced and replaced by JuergenKlinsmann.
The Mexico call-up comes just before Klinsmann is due to name the U.S. squad for friendlies against Costa Rica and Belgium on Sept. 2 and Sept. 6 — the same dates ofthe Mexican U-22 team’s games against Chile. Corona would face a major dilemma if Klinsmann names him to the U.S. squad.
“It would be a very complicated decision,” Corona told ESPNRadio. “We know the United States has a great project now with Klinsmann. It depends on a lot. It depends if both call me up at the same time or if the United States calls me up first [to the seniorteam].”
Corona, whose has Mexican citizenship from his father, is also eligible to play for El Salvador because of his mother’s heritage but has turned down recent advances by thatcountry’s federation, reports Tom Marshall.
