[AKRON-CLEVELAND STATE] Defending national champion Akron set an NCAA record for the longest home unbeaten streak (40 games) when it beat Cleveland State, 5-0,before a record-setting crowd of 5,241 fans at FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field Saturday night. Preseason All-American Darren Mattocks had two goals and anassist for the Zips, who gained revenge for their only loss of the 2010 season.

Akron surpassed the previous record held by Tulsa, which went undefeated in 39 consecutive home matches from1988-92. The Zips are now 38-0-2 at home during their historic run, which dates back to the start of the 2008 season.

Mattocks is one of only four starters back from Akron’s 2010championship team.

Five freshmen — Bryan Gallego, Wil Trapp, AkeilBarrett, David Mayer and DeAndre Yedlin — and one transfer — AodhanQuinn, the son of former U.S. national team midfielder Brian Quinn —  started for the rebuilding Zips.

Like Mattocks a product ofJamaica, Barrett had the fifth Akron goal, while Quinn, Trapp and Yedlin all had assists.

Also making his Akron debut was Zac Portillos, formerlywith the University of Washington.
