[UCLA-FLORIDA] No. 8 UCLA won the First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic, handing No. 7 Florida its first loss of the season with a 2-0 decision on Sunday. Canadian
freshman Ally Courtnall and U.S. international Sydney Leroux, the tournament MVP, scored for the Bruins, who improved to
3-0-0 under first-year coach BJ Snow.
The only goal of the opening half came in the 35th minute when freshman Kylie McCarthy sent a through ball into the box, where
Courtnall caught up with the ball and placed in her first goal of the season to the far post corner from 14 yards.
UCLA’s second goal came in the 72nd minute when another
freshman, Sarah Killion, intercepted a Gator clearance attempt and found Leroux, who tucked her shot into the near post corner.
Two other freshmen,
Samantha Mewis and Abby Dahlkemper, joined Leroux and Courtnall on the all-tournament team.
Another
freshman, goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland, made several big stops to keep the Gators off the scoreboard.
REACTION.
Florida coach Becky Burleigh: “I’m disappointed that we lost, but was encouraged by a lot of things that we saw. One goal was off a turnover
once again so that is obviously something that we’ve got to spend some time on. I think that we are capable of cleaning some of that up. This is just a step in the progress. We had great chance
and ultimately, you’ve got to stick those chances. It was great to see that we can create opportunities against a team the quality of UCLA but the next step is finishing those chances."
