[MARYLAND-WEST VIRGINIA] No. 7 Maryland came back from an early deficit to defeat No. 10 West Virginia, 3-1, on two goals by
John Stertzer and freshman Jereme Raley's insurance goal.
“It was a great win against a great team,” Terrapins coach Sasho Cirovski, who garnered career win No. 298, said. “That’s a team that has a chance to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. I thought
we played well. I was proud of our guys. For a reasonably young group, they stood tall. They really showed a lot of maturity against a really tough team.”
Against the
run of play, the Mountaineers went ahead in the 7th minute when forward Andy Bevin scored on a pass from midfielder Uwem
Etuk.
The complexion of the game turned in the 54th minute when West Virginia defender Uzi Tayou was called for a handball in the penalty
area, and Stertzer evened the score from the penalty spot.
Seven minutes later, the Terrapins went ahead when Taylor Kemp played a curling free
kick to Stertzer, who rose up and nodded the ball home for his third in just two games this season.
West Virginia’s troubles continued in the 65th minute when forward Franck Tayou was ejected for colliding with Maryland goalkeeper Will Swaim.
Raley put the Terps game away
on a flick from right back Widner Saint Cyr.
