Warzycha earns new multi-year deal

Robert Warzycha signed a new multiple-year agreement to remain as coach of MLS's Columbus Crew.

The former Polish international, who was in the final year of his three-year agreement, has the Crew in first place in the Eastern Conference with six games to play. He has posted a 45-29-28 MLS record in two-plus seasons and led the Crew to the playoffs the past two years. His teams are 55-41-33 in all competitions.

The Crew has been a surprise this season, taking the conference lead away from preseason favorite New York and Philadelphia despite a major overhaul of the roster that saw star Guillermo Barros Schelotto return to Argentina. Warzycha, 48, has spent 13 seasons with the Crew, first as a player, then as an assistant coach and now as head coach.

“I believe Robert’s record speaks for itself and that he has unquestionably earned the opportunity to continue leading our club,” Crew president and general manager Mark McCullers said in a statement. “He has injected his vision and personality into our style of play, while perpetuating the culture of excellence we have built in recent years with his effective incorporation of new talent into our returning core group.”
