Forlan, van Nistelrooy spark Manchester United past America in L.A.

Uruguayan forward Diego Forlan scored two goals and set up a sensational strike from Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy as English Premier League champion Manchester United beat Mexico's Club America, 3-1, Sunday in a friendly before 57,365 at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

The victory, on the six-team, seven-game ChampionsWorld Series exhibition tour, was the second of Manchester United's four-game U.S. tour. United topped Glasgow Celtic, 4-0, in its opener Tuesday in Seattle, and plays Italian champion Juventus on Thursday in East Rutherford, N.J., and Spanish giant Barcelona next Sunday in Philadelphia.

Barcelona topped Juventus on penalty kicks following a 2-2 tie in another ChampionsWorld Series match Sunday, played before 30,912 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass.

In L.A., Van Nistelrooy broke a scoreless tie two minutes into the second half, taking a Forlan flick-on past two defenders and firing to the upper-left from about 16 yards.

Forlan scored his first two minutes later, a header from Quinton Fortune's cross from the left, and added another with a first-time blast from an Ole Gunnar Solskjaer flick.

Christian Patino scored for America in the 87th minute. Alvaro Ortiz also found the net for the Mexicans, a 54th-minute free kick from 25 yards that referee Ali Saheli waved off because an America player made contact with a player in Manchester United's wall.

Argentine striker Javier Saviola scored in the 28th and 41st minutes for Barcelona. Juventus forced penalties with two late goals, by Marco De Vaio in the 86th minute and Fabrizio Miccoli in the 87th.
