Egypt's reign is over

[AFRICA NATIONS CUP QUALIFYING] Three-time defending champion Egypt won't be playing in next year's African Nations Cup. The Pharaohs were eliminated when the under-23 team Egypt fielded lost to Kai Kamara's Sierra Leone, 2-1, in qualifying on Saturday.

Bouna Coundoul
started in goal for Senegal, which clinched a berth in the 2012 finals in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea with a 2-0 win over the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Senegalese, who didn't qualify for the 2010 finals in Angola, will be one of the favorites with such players as Lille's Moussa Sow, the top scorer last season in France's Ligue 1, and Freiburg's Papiss Demba Cisse, second in the Bundesliga in scoring last season.

Burkina Faso, Botswana and Ivory Coast have also qualified.

Whitecaps midfielder Nizar Khalfan set up Mbwana Samatta for Tanzania's goal in its 1-1 tie with Algeria that left both teams tie for last place, three points behind leaders Morocco and the Central African Republic with one game to play.

For Mustapha Jarju (Vancouver), Sanna Nyassi (Colorado) and Kenny Mansally (New England), their hopes of advancing to next year's finals were dented when Gambia fell to Namibia, 1-0, on a late goal.

The Scorpions will have to beat group winner Burkina Faso in their final game and hope Libya beats Zambia to clinch one of the berths awarded to the best group runners-up.
