New Mexico wins with three late goals in 97 seconds

[AROUND THE COUNTRY] New Mexico needed only 97 seconds late in the game to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 victory over Cal State Northridge and take the TLC Invitational.

Kyle Venter, Devon Sandoval and Blake Smith scored for the Lobos, who are now 4-0-1.

“This was a great game, I mean, I thought we contr olled the ball well throughout, and they capitalized on a great opportunity early, but I’m really proud of our guys for staying in it,” UNM coach Jeremy Fishbein said. “We couldn’t have asked for a more exciting finish.”

-- Sophomore Mark Sherrod scored the game-winning goal, his third of the season, in the 78th minute to give unbeaten Memphis a 2-1 win over Wisconsin. The win was the 112th for Coach Richie Grant, making him the Tigers' all-time leader in victories.

-- J.J. Elder scored twice and Mitchell Cardenas added a goal and assist as unbeaten Campbell defeated Hartford, 3-2, at the UNCW adidas Classic. The Fighting Camels (3-0-1) are off to their best start since the 1988 squad won its first seven matches.

-- Albany handed Buffalo its first loss in six games, defeating the Bulls, 2-1, on Quintel Gates' goal with 40 seconds left in the first overtime session. David Pinto's header had put Albany ahead, but Joey Merlo's goal for UB forced overtime.
