[CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE] Almost perfect on the first two days of play in the Concacaf Champions League group stage, MLS clubs are unraveling in the regional
competition. Losses by FC Dallas and the Colorado Rapids at home and the Los Angeles Galaxy on the road Wednesday left the five MLS clubs with only seven points out of a possible 30 in the last two
days compared to 22 points out of a possible 24 against non-MLS opposition in the first two days.
ALAJUELENSE-LOS ANGELES GALAXY. Like the Seattle Sounders on Tuesday, the Galaxy were beaten by a Costa Rican opponent on a superb free kick. Pablo Antonio Gabas' left-footed shot from 30 yards was all Alajuelense needed to beat the MLS overall leader, 1-0, and take over first place in Group A.
But unlike the Sounders, who had the better of play against Herediano at home, the Galaxy was lucky to not to lose by more in the match played on the slick artificial turf in Alajuela.
If Morelia of Mexico beats Honduran club Motagua on Thursday, it will move into a tie with Alajuelense and drop the Galaxy to third place. After opening with wins in its first two games, Los Angeles has dropped its last two matches.
COLORADO RAPIDS-REAL ESPANA. Former Galaxy player Carlos Pavon scored twice in the first half to give Real Espana of Honduras a 2-1 over the Rapids in Group B.
Pavon's winning goal followed a errant clearance by Rapids defender Michael Holody, who has not played a minute for Colorado in MLS play this season. Sandwiched between Pavon's goal was the Rapids' equalizer scored by Andre Akpan.
The loss left the Rapids tied for third place with Motagua, which picked up its first win of the competition.
FC DALLAS-UNAM. FC Dallas gave up two goals in the last six minutes and fell to Mexican club UNAM, 2-0.
Second-half substitutes Eduardo Herrera and David Izazola scored for Pumas, who had only one point after two games but are now tied for first place with FC Dallas in Group C, making up a five-point deficit on the MLS club in a week.
