La Salle makes it nine shutouts in nine games

[AROUND THE COUNTRY] Melissa Sanger needed just one save to preserve her ninth shutout in nine games as La Salle remained unbeaten and unscored upon this season with a 1-0 win over Lehigh.

Freshman Maryam Huseini scored the second-half winner, chipping the ball just under the crossbar for the Explorers, the only team in Division I that has yet to be scored upon in 2011.

“Things got a bit nervy for us towards the end, but we found another way to win,” said La Salle coach Paul Royal. 

The Explorers (8-0-1) are off to the best start in school history.

-- Kentucky (8-2-0) got two goals apiece from Kelsey Hunyadi and Caitlin Landis and defeated Alabama, 4-1, in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide had a 19-6 edge in shots in the second half but could not muster a penalty kick from Theresa Diederich in the 83rd minute. Alabama received three red cards and five yellow cards.

-- Mary Beth Hamilton, Amelia Pereira and Arielle Aikens scored as Hartford beat UMBC, 3-0, to remain unbeaten at 8-0-2. The game was the America East opener for both teams.
