Terrapins end Bluejays' shutout streak

[MARYLAND-CREIGHTON] No. 2 Maryland edged No. 3 Creighton, 1-0, ending the Bluejays' season-long shutout streak and snapping their eight-game winning streak to start the season. Casey Townsend scored his team-high 11th goal of the season in the 14th minute to secure the win in front of 5,648 fans at Ludwig Field.

Patrick Mullins sent long ball forward for Townsend. Bluejay goalkeeper Brian Holt attempted to reach the bouncing ball first but couldn't punch it away. Townsend settled and slotted his shot around defender Eric Miller into an open net.

The goal snapped Creighton's scoreless streak to start the season at 752 minutes. Holt's school-record shutout streak stood at 754 minutes.

The Terrapins held Creighton without a shot until the 48th minute.

"Our goal was to be the best defensive team on the field tonight," Maryland coach Sasho Cirovski said. "This was a College Cup type of game. Creighton is the real deal and we knew defensively we had to be very good. To hold Creighton to zero shots in the first 45 minutes was very impressive. I am really impressed with my guys. I was a little concerned at how they would close out this game and they did a great job."

Maryland is now 10-0-1. Creighton's 8-0-0 start was its best since the 1993 team started 19-0-0.
