[MARYLAND-RUTGERS] Celebrating his 21st birthday, John Stertzer made sure it was a big day, scoring twice to lead No. 2
Maryland to a 2-1 win over Rutgers in overtime.
Stertzer scored in the 20th minute when he flicked Jereme Raley's corner kick past Rutgers goalkeeper Kevin McMullen.
The Scarlet Knights answered two minutes on Sam Archer's equalizer and pressured Maryland goalie Will Swaim well into the second half when they were reduced to 10 men after Robin Brown was sent off with a straight red card after a sliding tackle on Helge Leikvang.
In the first overtime, Leikvang served a perfect long ball to the head of Stertzer for the game-winner.
“Any game between Creighton and Virginia was going to be a tough game,” Maryland coach Sasho Cirovski said. “I feel like I didn’t do a good job of getting the team prepared mentally or physically for this game. I think it showed. We will do everything we can to get their minds and body ready for Friday.”
Maryland (11-0-1) heads to Charlottesville for an ACC matchup against Virginia on Friday.
