Lower seeds prevail in first leg of semifinals

[NASL] No. 6 Minnesota's 1-0 win over the top-seed Carolina RailHawks at the National Sports Center wasn't actually an upset. After alll, the NSC Stars had not lost to Carolina in four meetings in the regular season. But No. 3 Ft. Lauderdale pulled a bigger surprise, handing the second-seed Puerto Islanders their first loss at home all season with a 3-1 decision.

The Strikers broke open a scoreless deadlock in the second half with three goals from substitute Martin Nunez, Walter Restrepo and Mike Palacio.

Jonathan Fana, who played Friday night for the Dominican Republic in World Cup 2014 qualifying, had the lone Islanders' goal.

Andrei Gotsmanov's goal in the 90th minute gave Minnesota the win.
