Corona eyes Olympic chance

Joe Benny Corona, who was born in Los Angeles but raised in both Tijuana and San Diego and plays for Club Tijuana in the Mexican first division, was invited to the U.S. U-23 national team camp next week in Germany for players in contention for the squad that aims to qualify for the 2012 Olympics.

"It'll be my first trip to Europe,” said Corona. “Hopefully it won't be my last. ... [Reaching the Olympics] would be something huge. It's my next goal right now. It's something I've always dreamed of and I really want to go to London."

The 21-year-old winger/attacking midfielder played 10 minutes in the Mexico U-22 team's friendly against Chile on Sept. 7, but missed the cut for the Pan American Games squad.

His goals helped Club Tijuana win promotion to the first division and he scored its first goal at the top tier, but club is struggling and Corona last started a game on Sept. 18.
